You might think that healthcare would not be a target for criminals, but WannaCry – a strain of ransomware that hit the NHS and UK hospitals in 2017 – showed this was not the case. And the threat has not gone away – UK healthcare saw a 44 per cent rise in ransomware attacks during the pandemic. The protected health information (PHI) that hospitals and other healthcare providers hold can be extremely valuable – selling for more than a credit card number – if exfiltrated.
